The
Treat Farm Hike
Driving south from Empire on M-22 turn right on Norkonk Road. This is a
short road with a gate at the end. Park your car at the gate and walk
straight ahead up an old road to the farm. Explore all around the
farm and then follow a small path across
an open field area. You will end high on some bluffs overlooking Lake
Michigan.
Trail leading out across the old fields
toward the Lakeshore.
Family home is to the left, Barn to the
right. Note the interesting round structure just to the left of the barn.
It was built by pouring concrete walls, filling the building with dirt and
rocks by hand and then pouring cement atop the soil.
At the Lakeshore -- what a view!!
The Treat
family purchased this 200 acres in 1910 and cleared the land by hand.
Having made a living designing model-T cars in Detroit, Mr. Treat
reportedly decided to move north to “avoid the traffic”. The Farm now a
part of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Park.
