Petoskey
stone hunting along the beaches of Lake Michigan is very popular in
this area.
We’ve discovered that the best “finding” is on the beaches in Good Harbor
Bay and Port Oneida. (note the yellow markings on the map)

Petoskey Stones: are composed
of the fossilized skeletons of "Colony Coral" which lived in the warm
waters that covered Michigan some 350 million years ago during the
Devonian Period. They are most often found along the beaches from the
Sleeping Bear Area to the Petoskey area. When dry they look powdery grey,
and when wet the hexagonal pattern of the fossil is clearly visible.
Petoskey Stones are often polished (which also brings out their patterns)
and used in jewelry.
